Default Are you really addicted?

I read this news article on MSN today regarding internet/gaming addiction in China and how they are treating people. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17251571/

Are you really addicted to the internet, online forums, and online games like Guildwars? Can you stop if you really really had to?

I know I was pretty upset on Tuesday night when I came home to find out the power was off in our area, which meant no internet, no tv, no light, no radio, no microwave.............nothing! I found other ways to entertain myself, my family played cards and talked for a while, but eventually we broke down and couldnt take it anymore, so we loaded a netflix movie on our laptop and watched it in the dark (thank god for batteries!)

So, how addicted are you to the internet? If you were forced to stop then how would you do it, and what would you do for entertainment?

Interesting. I find myself much less adicted to games and such when i got to college. For some reason it seemed like a nice break whenever i was in a place that had no interent, or anything. So i guess i am not that addicted. During the summer i would of freaked out had we lost power, but if that happened while i am at college i could care less. I would probably just go hang out with friends, what i normally do anyways.

I could easily go without the internet if there was a viable, fun, alternative to take up my free time.

Unfortunately that doesn't exist.

When I have no internet, I read and listen to music or watch anime or movies or go out strolling a while.

When there is no electric power, and everything's dark, I just go to sleep.

Unfortunately for me, the only type of things that even remotely entertain me are electronic.

Cards? Too random, monotonous, and based on luck.
Reading? Have yet to read a book that I could stand to read more than once.
Board games? Always results in a family member cheating and everybody hating each other.
Sports? I suck at all physical activity due to a medical condition.
Walking? See above; I can't walk for extended periods.
Friends? I'm a nerd at a military school. I have no friends.
Chatting? Conversations tend to bore me.

I only play GW and use the internet when I am bored, I will never turn down any other activity over the internet, doing things that way keeps me non-addicted in my opinion.

Also there is a big difference from having no internet and having no power. I would say 80% of people on this world cannot live without power, as we have grown up our whole lives with it, internet is different, I would say a hell of a lot more people could last a hell of a lot longer without interent, except MySpacers (lol)

When i go on vacations or trips back home I rarely use the internet. I usually just check my e-mail and occasionally check guild wars updates and the forums. But otherwise I don't do much. But that is when it is warm outside. I love to swim, so I am usually over at a friends in the pool allllll day every day =)

But when school is in, and it's cold outside, I get bored very easily. I'm not into the whole going out and partying scene at college, so my free time is spent online, and during that time I am online a lot.

I never lost a car, a house, a girlfriend or a job, playing video games. Laugh my ass off and went about my day.

I use the internet for work. I'm online 14-18 hours a day, 5 days a week. I generally do a few hours of work over the weekend as well.

Could I live without internet? No, my work requires me to be online.
Do I want to? No, I'd go bankrupt.
Am I addicted? Yes and no.

Yeah, I could live without internet, I'd just play Oblivion >

But without power... hmm, that could pose some problems for me. I enjoy drawing, but I can't draw in the dark too well.

Once I was talking to an old man about that "Inter...net" thingy and he said to me "So is this like a box that contains a planet?" Well yes, that's what it is and I'm so glad I can be connected to the whole world. But addiction to the Internet doesn't differ much from addiction to drugs or alcohol. Personally I don't think I am addicted although I still get mad when the over-sensitive DSLAM is getting hit by thunder and the people that should be there to fix it are at home enjoying the thunderstorm. Yes, I could live without the Internet. It's not ideal but I don't think it's impossible.

I don't think I'm addicted, If I was I'd have IVI title. If I had to go without internet, its okay with me, I'm very sports(extreme) oriented. If I had to go without power, no problem, years ago we had no power for 2 whole months.

Sports+Friends= Survivability.

I am addicted some way or another... 'cause there a very few things that I find interesting or amusing enough to keep me away from froums and GW Of course, going to see a movie or on a concert or visiting friends is fun - but when I'm at home, I spend most of my time on the computer. But then again; I am 44 years old! I have a husband, a house, nice car, good job, a great child and a lovely dog. I can relax!

The way I see it, Guild Wars was mostly meant for gamers who want to play casually and still be good and have fun, unlike other games like World of Warcraft when it is necessary to play more than 4+ hours a day to get better and good. I don't see myself as and addict to Guild Wars since I still spend more time with my friends and social life than being on the computer. However, I play enough that I understand its gameplay and I can level many characters from 1-20 very easily and once at 20, have enough time to do whatever I can to get better gear or just have fun.
